The Bargain

I had been laundering dog blankets,
Getting out the muddy clod,
When I heard a quiet voice say,’
Do you believe in God? ’

I turned, expecting to find a
Feathered seraph with a trumpet start a revelry
Instead of which, a spaniel with
Big brown eyes was staring up at me.

I thought, ‘I know what this is,
This is just the usual tug –
You get dogs from Dogs’ Home, so here
Sits patently some dog from Dog.’

I snapped and snappishly replied,
‘Don’t do that supplicating thing –
I’m up to here with mud and hair
And things like that begotten shed.’

‘No, ’ it said, ‘my name’s Cassie and I
Was wandering near a farm,
I watched a mistress and herborder collie ‘Eat’ – and so
I thought I’d live where people are.

He®s life’s incumbent on me –
Our breeds together closely mesh
Will a goodly whack of love –
Don’t you see?

‘Indeed, my lady, I am but
A cast-off from a gnome,
Addressless and unkempt was I,
But I can take a steer for home.

The only thing that troubles me
Is I’m so scared of rings and chains –
The shrieks and howls, the animal smells,
The breeding dog’s domain.’

I thought a moment, then I said,
‘But when you live beside the ’,
You do not have to bother with a chain, you can
Run or sleep or play or dream nether fear or threat Because you’ll always be in loving
Hands. ’
