Sample Poems: A Glimpse into Prelutsky's Magical World

"Be Glad Your Nose is on Your Face"

Be glad your nose is on your face,
not pasted on some other place,
for if it were where it is not,
you might dislike your nose a lot.
Imagine if your precious nose
were sandwiched in between your toes,
that clearly would not be a treat,
for you'd be forced to smell your feet.
Your nose would be a source of dread
were it attached atop your head,
it soon would drive you to despair,
forever tickled by your hair.
Within your ear, your nose would be
an absolute catastrophe,
for when you were obliged to sneeze,
your brain would rattle from the breeze.
Your nose, instead, through thick and thin,
remains between your eyes and chin,
not pasted on some other place--
be glad your nose is on your face!

"I’m Making a List of Things I Must Say Sorry For"

I'm making a list of things I must say sorry for
just in case tomorrow I don’t live here any more,
I want to be forgiven, I’ll feel terrible if not–
If I’m gone and someone’s mad at me, that’ll be my lot.

I know I should be writing that I promise not to fight,
and I’ll never wake the baby–
And I’ll do neither one tonight.
But there must be many other things–I’ll say I’m sorry for
not studying the Spanish words I didn’t know before.

And if I’ve ever struck a blow I shouldn't have begun,
I’m sorry for that punch and promise not to hit another one.
And if I’ve told a fib that I intended to ignore,
I sincerely want to say
that I won’t fib like that any more.

There are many other things I’ve done that I won’t do again,
and as soon as you forgive me,
I’ll feel a lot less pain.
I promise I’ll apologize, each time I make you cross–
And I’ll make you all a list
in case I don't wake up tomorrow!
