Selected Inspirational Poems by Helen Steiner Rice

1. "The Praying Hands"

Two hands set in prayer
Seeking strength from above,
To face a world of trouble
And find solace and love...

For faith can work miracles
And anyone who prays
With his heart in his hands
And his hands on God's gaze...

Will feel a wonderful calm
In the midst of despair,
For God will be there
And lighten his care.

2. "The Bend in the Road"

Often we come to life's crossroads
And view what we think is the end,
But God has a much wider vision
And he knows that it's only a bend...

The road goes on and is smoother
And the "pause in the song" is a "rest,"
And the part that's unsung and unfinished
Is the sweetest and richest and best...

3. "The Touch of the Master's Hand"

'Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
Thought it scarcely worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin,
But held it up with a smile...

"What am I bidden, good folks," he cried,
"Who'll start the bidding for me?"
"A dollar, a dollar," then, two! Only two?
Two dollars, and who'll make it three?"

The people cried, no, the ones who bade
Were mostly friends of the man who passed,
And they didn't care much, if the violin sold,
They would have been ashamed to own it at last...

And then the old violin was carried away
And then they went with a sneer on their face
And they thought "we do not like that disgrace,"
And then they thought of the old violin
And they wished they still owned it, and they wished...they could have owned it...

But then came the Master, and the table was went,
And he bade two dollars, two, then three...

And then the panel was put up for a bid,
For 100, then a thousand, then ten-ten-thousand indeed,
And then, the old violin...was valued with good price,
And now, that old violin...is now...Valued...at a Million!
